The purpose of Physical Education is to enable students to demonstrate individually and with others the physical skills, practices and values to enjoy a lifetime of active and healthy living.
In West Spring Primary School, the PE programme starts progressively in the lower primary. Students will master the fundamental motors skills using a broad variety of ‘PLAY’ concept activities in dance, gymnastics, outdoor education, sports and games.
PE programme in West Spring Primary School aims to develop the students’ social and affective outcome so as to bring about the total development of our students. Teachers emphasize the importance of displaying school values – 3RICH during PE lessons.
Exploring Technology during PE
At West Spring Primary, ICT is one of the many tools used during Formative Assessment. Here is one of our students using an Ipad to assess his peer. Our students are taught to look out for teaching cues and use the Ipad to record their movement. Learning is reinforced and students can better perform the skill.
PE ROGRAMMES @WPS
West Spring Sports Day was held in conjunction with the International Friendship Day. Students observed a mock up Olympic styled Opening Ceremony with march pass and the torch relay. It brought much splendour and pageantry to the occasion.
The lower primary students participated in inter class relays while the upper primary students participated in inter class sports and games like floorball, half-court basketball, captain’s ball and beach volleyball.
At primary 3, Students undergo the SwimSafer Programme which includes learning skills like front crawl or breast stroke. This helps our students to overcome their fear of the water.
FRESH (FRuits to Enjoy and Stay Healthy) Wednesday Programme
The school introduces the FRESH Wednesday Programme to inculcate the healthy habit of eating fruits. Each week, students will be given a fruit to eat before recess. This programme which was piloted in 2015 has continued to introduce a variety of fruits to the students. Each year, our students would have tasted more than 20 variety of exotic fruits such as persimmon, apricot, strawberries, blueberries, etc. In addition, our students are also educated on the fruits and its nutritional values. Students learn the variety of vitamins, minerals, fibre and its benefits to our body during the programme.
The Children in Active Recreational Exercise (CARE) Programme organises thrice weekly physical activities to helps students maintain healthy weight. Students not only participate in sports and games but given advice on their dietary food intake.
Pre-Assembly morning exercise programme are held on Mondays and Tuesdays. A variety of exercises such as aerobics, Jump Jam and Wushu routine are conducted to get students to work out before lesson begins. Regular weekly run are also conducted for students to run at the school’s astro turf.
