Principal’s Message
Welcome to the West Spring Primary School’s website. As you browse through this website, you will learn more about our vibrant school, wonderful students known as West Springers and staff, as well as our partners in education.
On 24 October 2016, the school was officially opened by the Minister for Education, Mr Ng Chee Meng. It was a significant milestone for West Spring Primary School as all 690 students, staff and more than 1000 parents came together in the joyous celebration. The students of MOE Kindergarten@West Spring also joined us on that day. The theme of the event was aptly coined as ‘We shine’ to capture the pioneering spirit of the school community. The word ‘SHINE’ also means ‘Students, Staff, Stakeholders who are Happily Inspired and Nurtured for Excellence.’ On that day, we did shine in celebration. It was also timely that the school community take stock of what we have built in the span of three short years.
The school started operations on 2 January 2014 with very strong interest from parents in our school. The school enjoyed full enrolment of 210 students in 7 classes. In 2015, the school increased the enrolment by one additional class due to popular demand. In that year, we welcomed another 8 classes of 240 Primary 1 students. In 2016 and 2017, we welcomed a total of 480 students. The school has grown from strength to strength. The school remains popular at the Primary 1 Phase 2C registration for 2018.
The environment shapes both the academic and non-academic programmes that the school offers. With new design norms, the school has facilities, which include redesigned classrooms, dance and performing arts studios, and many outdoor experiential learning areas that support the delivery of holistic education in both academic and non-academic areas. Over the years, the school has furnished a number of joyful learning spaces that includes the Science Rooms, Mathematics Room, the DELI (Delightful Experience in Learning and Interaction), the MALL (Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Learning with LEGO), FOCAL Green (Focus, Organise & Concentrate to Achieve Learning) and ARCADE (Area to cReate And Design for Everyone). The photos below are just some of the examples of the colourful learning spaces in the school.

The school architecture is designed for an environmentally friendly and sustainable school environment. In 2016, the school was awarded the Lotus Award for the School Green Awards. The school jumped 3 levels to attain the Lotus Award from a Palm award in 2014. It reflects the school’s efforts in educating our students on environmental concerns. In line with being environmentally conscious, the school uses technology to go electronic and reduce our carbon footprint. Most recently, the school was awarded the Gold Star under the Sustaining Toilets As Restrooms (STAR) Awards programme by the Restroom Association (Singapore).
Our schools’ PLAY (Purposeful Learning Activities for the Young) programmes and activities have been designed to nurture the 21st century competencies in our West Springers, develop their character and help them to better understand their role in the community and enable them to contribute to society. The students experience engaging lessons for them to find the joy in learning. Beyond the classrooms, the students also enjoy PLAY@recess when they participate in fun activities that encourage them to be interested in the various academic and non-academic subjects. For instance, the multi-cultural exposure to various ethnic groups and languages in Singapore, playing traditional games, taking care of the LIFE garden, feeding the animals at the ARK (Animals Rescued for Kids), being active when shooting basketballs with fellow schoolmates or going to the library. There is a variety of activities to cater to various learners during recess.

In 2018, the school embarked on our Applied Learning Programme (ALP) which is also named, Sustaining the Earth with AppliedSolutions (SEAS). It aims to inculcate in our students the 21st Century Competencies through learning experiences in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). As part of SEAS, the Makers’ ARCADE was also officially launched in the same year, to provide more opportunities for students to tinker as well as think out of the box as they discover and create solutions to solve real-world problems.
Under SEAS, students experience joyful learning beyond the core curriculum as they explore the connections between disciplines and subjects. For instance, P3 students learnt about Singapore’s vision to be a zero-waste nation and explored upcycling to transform waste into products and toys for better environmental value; P4 students tinker with recyclables and Strawbees as a prototyping tool and do simple programming with Quikbots to make toys and robots; and P5 students explore unmanned aerial vehicle or drones and use it in an mock humanitarian rescue mission.
Our staff at West Spring Primary are passionate about education and subscribe to the belief that West Springers be provided opportunities to learn in meaningful and fun ways to experience big and small successes in school. We, therefore, strive to provide each and every West Springer with a challenging and engaging curriculum through the PLAY curriculum and SEAS.
We share the responsibility for the intellectual, social and character development of West Springers along with their families and the community. It is with this collaborative partnership that we seek to nurture confident, curious, enthusiastic, innovative and respectful leaders who will uphold their school’s values (Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Integrity, Care & Harmony) through the school’s strong character development programmes. Through these efforts, the school experiences the joy learning throughout their lives. We also hope to nurture students with the entrepreneurial dare, resilience and grit to keep trying till they succeed. To illustrate my pride in our students, I share the video of our Friend of Singa Ambassadors exhibiting their joy of learning when they kept persevering till they perfected their recipe for strawberry sorbet at the DELI. The song featured in this video was composed and sung by students and parents.
